Web Deploy: IIS6 to IIS7 Migrations + Link Extensions

Web Deploy: IIS6 to IIS7 Migrations + Link Extensions

Web Deploy: IIS6 to IIS7 Migrations + Link Extensions

Recently I was having a conversation with one of Web Deploy (MSDeploy) users and an interesting scenario came up.  He essentially wanted to move his site from IIS 6.0 to IIS 7 and wanted to consider Web Deploy to do this.  In addition he actually was fine with just xCopy-ing the site's content from IIS6 server to IIS7 server as it was almost 6GB+ in size and trying to create a zip package for it was not most the optimal way of using resources, nevertheless creating a zip package using Web Deploy for just the IIS configuration is what was certainly desirable due to ease of portability & use. I thought this would be a good opportunity to write a quick note to share with you that migration from IIS 6 to IIS 7 was one of the original...(read more)

Frequently Asked Questions about the ASP.NET Security Vulnerability

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 08:41 PM PDT

Two days ago I published an important blog post about a security vulnerability in ASP.NET .  In it I discussed a workaround that we recommend customers use to help prevent attackers from using the vulnerability against your applications. Below are answers to some common questions people have asked since then about the vulnerability. Is Microsoft going to release an update to fix the vulnerability? Yes.  We are working on an update to ASP.NET that we will release via Windows Update once it has been thoroughly tested and is ready for broad distribution. Until the update is available, we will also publish details on workarounds (like the one described in this post ) that can be applied immediately to help protect against the vulnerability...(read more)

Dynamically Centering a Windows Forms Label Control

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 06:13 PM PDT

I'm working on an athletic workout journal application that will include an Interval / Countdown Timer. I plan to build several versions of this application in different technologies (WPF, Web, Phone) but I'm building the first version in Windows Forms. I want the user to be able to dynamically set the size of the "Stopwatch" display font, then resize the form and have the text re-center in the form, taking into consideration the new font size. Stuff like this is easy in HTML, but not so much in Windows Forms. Though I'm still in the early stages I thought I'd share the bit of math that I've come up with and invite any suggestions you might have. Code Snippet using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace WorkOutTimer { public partial...(read more)

Please read if you have public ASP.NET sites

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 06:03 PM PDT

Yesterday, a new crypto oracle-type vulnerability was publicly disclosed. It is an important vulnerability that is likely to be exploitable on a large proportion of ASP.NET sites, even those that are using configuration settings that were previously considered safe. There is a workaround available already that should be set-up right now. You should pay a lot of attention to this and apply the workaround without trying to simplify it as that may result in your sites still being vulnerable. The issue is rather subtle (like pretty much all oracle attacks are). Scott published a blog post with all the details that I will not attempt to reproduce here in order to minimize any chance of confusion. Please go to Scott's post , read it and do what you...(read more)
