Important: ASP.NET Security Vulnerability

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 04:23 AM PDT

A few hours ago we released a Microsoft Security Advisory about a security vulnerability in ASP.NET.  This vulnerability exists in all versions of ASP.NET. This vulnerability was publically disclosed late Friday at a security conference.  We recommend that all customers immediately apply a workaround (described below) to prevent attackers from using this vulnerability against your ASP.NET applications. What does the vulnerability enable? An attacker using this vulnerability can request and download files within an ASP.NET Application like the web.config file (which often contains sensitive data). At attacker exploiting this vulnerability can also decrypt data sent to the client in an encrypted state (like ViewState data within a page...(read more)

jQuery UI on the Microsoft CDN

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 10:25 AM PDT

The jQuery UI team just added jQuery UI to the Microsoft Ajax Content Delivery Network (CDN). Thanks to them, you can start using jQuery UI in your ASP.NET websites by linking to jQuery UI at the following address: http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery.ui/1.8.5/jquery-ui.js You can start using the CDN now for free. No registration is required. Using jQuery UI from the CDN can substantially improve the performance of your production ASP.NET websites. The Microsoft CDN is composed of servers distributed around the world. When users request a page from your website, the users can retrieve jQuery UI from a server located geographically close to them. In addition, because browsers cache JavaScript files relative to a domain, serving jQuery UI from...(read more)

IE9, Site Specific Browsers, and adding your own Jump List Items to Pinned Tabs

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 12:18 PM PDT

Site Specific Browsers aren't a really new idea. In 2005 there was an app called Bubbles I ran for a while that would let you run a website with minimal "browser chrome." Mozilla Prism (né WebRunner) is a Firefox add-in that does a similar thing. Google Chrome includes the idea of Application Shortcuts. The idea of all this is that some web apps are really applications and you think about them as applications. For me, I think of Gmail and Facebook and Twitter and Basecamp as applications not necessarily as browser tabs. The notion of Site-Specific Browsers is definitely arriving. Internet Explorer 9 Beta (IE9) is out now and includes a featured called " Site Pinning " which is a effectively Site Specific Browsers. It's...(read more)
