Dispelling a Common WPF/SL Myth Posted: 08 Sep 2009 09:13 AM PDT Everywhere I look I find WPF/Silverlight developers who believe a very popular myth: You cannot update a ViewModel or an ObservableCollection from a non-UI thread. Like most myths, there is an element of truth here. But not understanding that truth can Read More......(read more) |

First step in troubleshooting complex issues: Define and scope your issue properly Posted: 09 Sep 2009 04:21 AM PDT Is it a plane, is it a bird, is it a UFO? Before you can delve into any kind of troubleshooting of an issue you need to thoroughly define it. If you don't you'll probably end up spending a lot of time randomly gathering and looking at data that is probably not even relevant to the issue at hand. More importantly, how do you even know that your problem is fixed if you don't have a good definition of the problem? This might sound like common sense, but having worked with troubleshooting the better part of the last 10 years I can tell you that it is extremely common that people start looking at data before really understanding the problem. More often than not this is because people are stressed and want to fix the problem fast...(read more) |
Microsoft Dev-Labs Introduces Doloto for AJAX Posted: 08 Sep 2009 12:27 PM PDT In their own words …. Doloto is an AJAX application optimization tool, especially useful for large and complex Web 2.0 applications that contain a lot of code, such as Bing Maps, Hotmail, etc. Doloto analyzes AJAX application workloads and automatically performs code splitting of existing large Web 2.0 applications. After being processed by Doloto, an application will initially transfer only the portion of code necessary for application initialization. Business Apps Example for Silverlight 3 RTM and .NET RIA Services July Update: Part 25: ViewModel Posted: 07 Sep 2009 06:22 PM PDT ViewModel (or Model-View-ViewModel) is an emerging pattern in the WPF, Silverlight space which enables a separation of concerns similar to that of the MVC pattern that is popular on for stateless web apps today (for example: ASP.NET MVC). John Gossman was the first one I heard talk about the pattern from his days working on Expression Blend . Of course, this was is simply an application of Martin Fowler's Presentation Model pattern. In this example, I will take our ever popular SuperEmployees application and re-write it with the ViewModel pattern. As with any emerging patterns, there are lots of variations, all with their strengths and weaknesses.. I have picked an approach that I felt was best as an introduction...(read more) |
