Silverlight 4 + RIA Services - Ready for Business: Validating Data

Posted: 23 Mar 2010 10:38 AM PDT

To continue our series let's look at data validation our business applications. Updating data is great, but when you enable data update you often need to check the data to ensure it is valid.  RIA Services as clean, prescriptive pattern for handling this.   First let's look at what you get for free.  The value for any field entered has to be valid for the range of that data type.  For example, you never need to write code to ensure someone didn't type is "forty-two" into a textbox bound to an int field. You also get nice looking and well behaved validation exposure in the UI.  Note: if you are not seeing this, ensure that "ValidatesOnExceptions=True" is in the binding expression for the each field Of course...(read more)

Podlogger – Half Baked Code, but yours for free.

Posted: 23 Mar 2010 06:12 AM PDT

Some time ago I started building a demo application that would have been posted on www.asp.net . It is a Podcast Publishing application and completing "basic" functionality we decided that it was a bit too complex for the intended introductory material. Though not finished (Meaning NOT FINISHED, INCOMPLETE, IMPERFECT, ETC) I thought I'd share it in case anyone finds it useful. Some of the stuff that is in there : Basic Post Publication with Rich Editor File Upload Comments Submission RSS Feed Publication Integrated Silverlight Audio Player Basic Admin This code is NOT supported and NOT offered as best practice. It's simply a prototype that I'm sharing in case anyone finds it useful. If you use it anywhere, please let me know what you grow it...(read more)

Good Times and Vibes at Mix 10

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 11:04 PM PDT

Last week I spent a few days in Las Vegas attending the Mix 10 conference . Mix is billed as … A 3 day conference for web designers and developers building the world's most innovative web sites. Which certainly reflects its origins as a conference focused on the web and web standards. But this year, it seemed that the scope for Mix was expanded to be about, well, a Mix of technologies as the Windows Phone 7 series figured prominently at the conference. Scott Hanselman and I are seen here attempting to tutor this young man about a language called "JavaScript" Mix of communities One aspect I love about Mix is it's also a Mix of communities. Sure, it's heavily Microsoft dominated, since it is, well, Microsoft that puts it on, but this conference...(read more)
