Posted: 17 Aug 2009 10:28 AM PDT

My one-hundred-and-seventy-fifth podcast is up . It's the return of Jeff Atwood. He and the team have been making lots of great speed optimizations to Stackoverflow lately. What tools are they using? What kinds of speed improvements are they seeing, and what can you do to exploit their experience? Subscribe: Download: MP3 Full Show Do also remember the complete archives are always up and they have PDF Transcripts , a little known feature that show up a few weeks after each show. Telerik is our sponsor for this show. Check out their UI Suite of controls for ASP.NET . It's very hardcore stuff. One of the things I appreciate about Telerik is their commitment to completeness. For example, they have a page about their Right-to-Left support...(read more)

How can I make you learn and benefit from my Blog? and how can I learn from you?

Summer is almost over and a new season of heavy work is beginning.  I wanted to take this opportunity to start on a new page and make sure that I'm spending my cycles doing the right things.  I've been blogging for almost 3 years now and throughout the blogs life I've been blogging pretty much the same way, trying to show examples of where me and fellow developers have gotten into situations that have caused crashes, memory leaks, exceptions, hangs etc., so that we can all learn from the situations and avoid them. Throughout the 3 years I have gotten a lot of comments saying that posts have helped developers, but I have also gotten more private comments saying that what I am talking about lies so far out of their realms that they don...(read more)

That's a decision many of you will be making in the future if you haven't already.  I've done both already and have had success with both approaches.  I'm not sure there's a single right answer to which choice you should make.  I can tell...( read more )...(read more)

Divine Vision, black helicopters, or sleep deprivation?

Today, while sitting at the kitchen table at my sister in law's house in PA, waiting for my nephew's 9th birthday party to kick into gear, I had a vision. By vision, I mean something along the lines of the Cheesus , chipotle Mary , chipped Jesus on toast...( read more )...(read more)

Demeter Transmogrifiers To The Rescue

Posted: 16 Aug 2009 05:54 PM PDT

In a recent post, The Law of Demeter Is Not A Dot Counting Exercise , I wanted to peer into the dark depths of the Law of Demeter to understand it's real purpose. In the end I concluded that the real goal of the guideline is to reduce coupling, not dots, which was a relief because I'm a big fan of dots (and stripes too judging by my shirt collection). However, one thing that puzzled me was that there are in essence two distinct formulations of the law, the object form and the class form. Why are there two forms and how do they differ in a practical sense? Let's find an example of where the law seems to break down and perhaps apply these forms to solve the conundrum as a means of gaining better understanding of the law. RĂ©mon Sinnema has a great...(read more)
